Since 2005<\/strong>, Ecuador<\/strong> became part of the “Apostille” Convention.<\/strong> The apostille<\/strong> is a modern way of legalizing documents to be effective in Ecuador (and other signatory countries). With the apostille<\/strong>, the legalization of documents in the consulates of Ecuador was eliminated, and with it, the cumbersome and tedious procedures in the consulates were abolished<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

By means of Executive Decree 1700-A<\/strong>, published in Official Gazette Number 357<\/strong> on June 16, 2004<\/strong>, Ecuador adhered to the “XII Hague International Convention Abolishing the Legalization of Foreign Public Documents”<\/strong>(Hague Apostille Convention<\/strong>), signed in The Hague, The Netherlands<\/strong>, on October 5, 1961<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The main objective<\/strong> of the convention is precisely to exonerate, suppress or “…abolish the requirement of diplomatic or consular legalization for foreign public documents…”<\/strong>(Text of the convention<\/strong>).<\/p>\n

Ecuadorian consulates do NOT apostille documents<\/strong>, as people mistakenly think.<\/p>\n
